Composite Fillings / Bonding

There are many clinical applications Cosmetic Dentistry and for the use of composite bonded restorations, specifically.  Often, very conservative preparation can yield very attractive treatment outcomes that blend almost seamlessly with the remaining natural tooth structure.  Dr. Ciuffreda’s philosophy is to utilize bonding for relatively smaller cavities or defects.  Veneers or crowns are the treatment of choice for larger restorations or more involved “smile makeovers”.

 Crowns and Veneers (porcelain laminates)

before Cosmetic Dentistrybefore after Cosmetic Dentistry

Crowns and Veneers provide the most esthetic restoration and / or cosmetic enhancement possible. They provide a tremendous range of size, shape and shade / color options. These procedures can create the “movie star”, “supermodel” or “smile makeover” smiles and can have a wonderful effect on overall facial appearance as well.

In general, crowns involve the reduction of more tooth structure and are warranted when there is a compromise of actual remaining tooth structure, following endodontic therapy (root canal), or when additional strength is required. Although the “gold standard” of crowns is beautiful porcelain fused to a high noble gold alloy (that is porcelain covering over a metal framework – our office uses only high noble gold alloys for this… see the restorative page for more information on that), all porcelain / ceramic crowns will typically provide the greatest cosmetic result as they allow for a degree of translucency, most closely matching natural tooth structure.

Veneers are thin shells of porcelain used to cosmetically restore a tooth. They generally require less removal of tooth structure and are typically indicated for teeth that do not require large degrees of restoration. As they are naturally all porcelain, they provide the translucency as discussed above most closely matching the characteristics of natural tooth structure.

No one restoration is ideal for everyone. It is important to consider each patient on an individual basis to determone the advantages and disadvantages of any particular treatment option.

 Tooth Whitening (bleaching)

A bright smile conveys the look of youth, health, confidence and success. Our office offers two excellent options for whitening that are both prescription strength and available only through a dental office: a take home system and an in-office system. Both are high quality and clinically proven Opalescence products.

The take home system employs the use a set of ten (upper/ lower) easy to use, tray delivered strips that are worn for approximately 1/2 hour per day. We have had outstanding results and patient satisfaction with this lower cost, high value option.

The in-office procedure is truly the “gold standard” of tooth whitening. A much stronger gel is placed in a very controlled manner, with the gums protected, on the teeth for approximately a one hour appointment.

It is important to realize that certain colorations and conditions of teeth respond differently to whitening procedures, so a consultation and evaluation with Dr. Ciuffreda is essential to determine if whitening is advisable for you, and the advantages that one system might have over the other for you.

Another important factor to consider is that crowns, veneers and composite / bonded fillings do not change color with tooth whitening procedures. Therefore we generally advise our patients to whiten their teeth first, prior to any restorative treatments. This way, we will most closely match your new restorations to your new, lighter shade!

Cosmetic (“Invisible”) Partial Dentures

Gone are the days of those unsightly metal clasps! Practically no one will no you have partial dentures! Now we can create stunning partial dentures that utilize gum or tooth – colored flexible clasping. Besides being wonderfully esthetic, these types of dentures place much less strain on the remaining teeth as opposed to conventional dentures. This of course translates into keeping your own remaining teeth longer.   So for all of these reasons and many more,Trust Dr. Len Ciuffreda, and experienced cosmetic dentist in NJ for all of your dental services and needs.
